The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations plays a key role in international efforts to defeat hunger.Founded in 1945, the FAO's mandate includes improving nutrition levels, agricultural productivity and the quality of life of rural populations while providing a boost to the world economy.The FAO, which serves both developed and developing countries, is a neutral forum within which all countries can meet to negotiate agreements and debate policies.The FAO helps developing countries and transitional countries to modernize their organization and improve their agricultural, forestry and fishing practices, to ensure a healthy diet for everyone.The FAO's four main areas of activity are: - Ensuring access to information for everyone. - Sharing policy expertise. - Providing a meeting point for governments. - Contributing its knowledge on the ground.
