Apprenticeships in paper recycling for young people from the shanty towns of São Paulo
Participants in this scheme are aged between 16 and 19. They must come from the slums of Sao Paulo and follow their apprenticeship in paper recycling in parallel to their regular schooling.
They use recycled paper to make stationery items (agendas, address books, writing paper, photo albums etc.) which are sold in shops, the income from which supplements their monthly salary, which is subject to tax.
The NGO in charge of the programme is Reciclar, which right now provides training for 45 apprentices – a number which will soon rise to 100. And thanks to the assistance of the Carrefour International Foundation, they will now receive additional training from volunteer professionals: languages (English, Portuguese), IT, mathematics etc. Trainees receive two meals a day, and psychological guidance is also available.
“This work awakens their skills, and gives them the confidence they need to work under their own steam, to go out and find a job. Young people learn the value of team work here, social responsibility, the importance of effort and professional excellence.”
The training provided by RECICLAR is primarily practical, while trainees also work to develop the personal and social skills which adolescents need.
