Over 15% of the Polish population lives in poverty. This reality is even starker for isolated and frail elderly people, who represent 11.7% of the population. The Carrefour International Foundation, which is fighting all forms of exclusion, sponsors the work done by the Little Brothers of the Poor association in Warsaw, Poznan and Lublin.
The population of Poland is 40 million, of whom 6 million suffer from malnutrition.
Most of the work carried out by the Little Brothers of the Poor is done in retirement homes. They also offer home care.
A team made up of one staff member and 175 volunteers assists over 400 elderly people.
The involvement of 175 volunteers has made it possible to organize holidays as well as various entertainments such as concerts and dances. These activities have helped to create social ties between the groups of elderly people and the active population.
Teams who are really committed
Apart from the year-round food donations, the men and women from Carrefour Poland have organized several awareness campaigns for their customers, by which they hope to persuade them to give their financial support to the fight against the social exclusion of elderly people.
