Italy : Partnership between Carrefour Italy and Fondazione Banco Alimentare
In 2010, Carrefour Italy and Fondazione Banco Alimentare arranged for the collection of fresh produce in all Carrefour stores in Italy.
The Food banks collect, manage and distribute groceries to help those in greatest need to get back on their feet. They work without charge and aim to reduce waste, while embodying the principles of giving, sharing, charity and volunteering.
Since 1989, Fondazione Banco Alimentare has been distributing food products to over 8,000 local social organisations in Italy.
In order to further promote good practice within the Group, on 29 March 2010 Giuseppe Brambilla, Executive Director of Carrefour Italy and Marco Lucchini, Director General of the Fondazione Banco Alimentare, signed an agreement regarding the donation of surplus food and the collection of fresh produce in all Carrefour stores in Italy.
In order to ensure safety of food consumption for all beneficiaries of the partner associations and to follow hygiene and food safety standards when collecting food products in the stores, an educational programme has been developed to offer the volunteers in Italy’s 21 food banks training in the selective sorting, use and distribution of groceries collected in the stores.
Thanks to donations from producers, the food industry, wholesale distributors, the European Union and the general public, the Food Banks in Italy were able to collect and distribute 9400 tons of products, equivalent to 19 million meals, in 2010.
There are currently 24 hypermarkets in this project and the intention is to extend the project by the end of the year to the following regions: Lombardy, Piedmont, the Aosta Valley, Tuscany, Emilia Romagna, Lazio, Friolli, Veneto, Marche, Molise and Sardinia (33).
