France : Aid for flood victims in the county of Var
Following the violent storms that hit the Var department (France) on 15 June 2010, local and regional Carrefour stores, along with Carrefour France and Carrefour Foundation acted promptly to aid the victims.
The day after the disaster struck, two truckloads of water, worth 5000 €, were distributed at the Carrefour store and Town Hall in the town of Trans. The Trans Carrefour store itself donated two vacuum cleaners to the municipality, as well as a wide range of other emergency supplies.
Following on from this aid, a warehouse in the region delivered donations of food and non-perishable goods to the municipal authorities in the towns of Puget and Roquebrune-sur-Argens, as well as to the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur (PACA) regional offices of the aid organization, Secours Populaire in Antibes and Draguignan. Pallets of sponges, household cleaning fluids, milk, nappies, dressings and various other consumables, worth over 16,000 €, were delivered by teams organized and funded by Carrefour Foundation.
Meanwhile, the Draguignan Carrefour store served 2000 meals to fire-fighters, rescue workers and municipal employees, from 15 to 24 June. Thanks to the efforts of staff from the Carrefour store, crockery, petrol and cleaning materials were distributed to rescue workers, as well as emergency clothing and textiles (jeans, towels, etc), all helping to reduce the suffering of victims of the disaster.
In all, expenditures of over 17,000 € by the Draguignan store were underwritten by the Carrefour Foundation, as emergency aid following the storm.
Carrefour Foundation has provided over 40,000€ to cover donations by stores and warehouses, while the Paris Solidarity warehouse sent 17 palettes of goods to employees in affected areas and to the municipalities.
The local stores also provided gifts of clothing, toiletries, and foodstuffs to employees, while GEM donated household electrical goods and Carrefour’s solidarity fund gave 500 to 3000€ per employee).
There was also the solidarity movement set up within the various stores in the Côte d'Azur and Provence areas, which sent extra staff to help damaged stores to reopen quickly after the disaster.
