France : A.I.D.E.S. Alcohol: raising awareness of and preventing alcohol-related problems
Led by healthcare professionals, AIDES Alcool, the Association Indépendante d'Entraide Sociale, supports people and/or institutions from a preventive or therapeutic point of view on issues relating to the use of alcohol or psychoactive substances (tobacco, cannabis and medicinal and other - illegal - drugs).
The association works from the angle of personal fulfilment (reinforcing self-esteem, building up confidence and aiding re-entry into the workplace, making people feel better in themselves) and takes a proactive approach to risk factors generated by businesses. Particular attention is paid to populations with financial problems and/or suffering exclusion.
These activities, which extend across the entire Rhone-Alpes region and sometimes beyond, are concentrated in two units: the prevention unit and the care centre.
Initially, the Carrefour International Foundation is helping to perpetuate achievements of the association such as the PEC programme (Prevention through Expression and Creation), PRAPS (a regional programme providing access to prevention and care), a regional programme called "Alcool, psychotropes au travail" (Alcohol and Psychotropic Drugs in the Workplace) that aims to prevent high-risk behaviour and addiction in the workplace, and a play followed by an informal discussion, which forms a successful meeting point for prevention and artistic creation.
Aware that alcoholism and dependence on illicit substances are real national problems which can confront anyone and everyone, the Foundation will subsequently be working with the Carrefour Group to heighten awareness of these issues among its employees, team members and customers by disseminating educational material and providing access to training.
