France : “let’s move ! » against children obesity with Unis-Cité’s volunteers

The Carrefour Foundation suports the launching og Unis-Cité’s new project in 2011, to raise to increase awareness about the importance to have a healthy diet among children thanks to the work of young people doing their Civil Service.

According to the "Plan National Nutrition Santé" / National Health and Nutrition Plan, almost 15% of the children are considered overweight or obese, and this probability is even higher for children coming from poor social backgrounds. The risk for the child of a worker to be obese is indeed 6 times higher than for the child of an executive, the worrying part being that more than 1 out of 2 children who are obese at the age of 6 will remain obese as adults. Obesity generates both sanitary (heart diseases), social (discrimination and exclusion) and economic (higher spending on health) problems.

To fight this contemporary problem, Unis-Cité launches its new national programm in 2011, which will be first experimented in three cities: Mantes la Joly, Juvisy and Valenciennes. In each of these cities, 8 young volunteers doing their civil service will meet children in schools, suported by local actors, in order to raise their awareness concerning the need to have a healthy diet and to practice sport on a regulary basis. They will therefore organize playing games, physical activities and taste-discovering workshops , to make the children their own health adviser, and above all the spokespersones of a good diet among their families. Certain activities will be lead in collaboration with Carrefour employees who will make the children and volunteers discover their work in food retail. The volunteers will also participate in the great anual collections of food organized in stores during winter to support the Food Banks and the Restos du Coeur.
