China : Carrefour mobilizes to bring help to the Chinese people
An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale struck China on Monday 12 May 2008 (at 2.28 pm local time). The epicentre was close to Wenchuan in Sichuan province, in the south west of the country. When the catastrophe was announced on Monday evening, the Carrefour Group - via its International Foundation - paid a grant of 2 million yuan (€200,000) to the Chinese Red Cross as an initial emergency measure.
Carrefour has been present in China for over 10 years and currently has 122 hypermarkets and 280 hard-discount stores there. Five of these stores are located in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan, the area worst affected by the earthquake.
So Carrefour China set the wheels in motion to help take care of the victims, and 18 trucks laden with supplies, tents and blankets were despatched to the Chengdu emergency aid centre by our Carrefour stores in Shanghai, Wuhan, Kunming, Chongqing, Chengdu and Changsha.
In parallel with this aid in kind, Eric Legros, Executive Director of Carrefour China, visited Chengdu on Wednesday and announced that an additional donation of 1 million yuan (€100 000) was being made to the Hope School programme, to help rebuild schools.
As no damage was suffered by the five Carrefour stores in Chengdu, supplying them with basic products such as water and instant noodles is now a priority.
Everything possible is being done to provide maximum assistance to the stricken population: official estimates put the number of victims at 50,000.
