Literacy programme
In its efforts to promote social integration, Carrefour Brazil implemented a literacy programme named "Aulas de Ciudadania" ("lessons in citizenship") in partnership with Alfa Sol, an NGO which works in child education.
The literacy classes took place in community halls, association assembly rooms and the churches of the city of Cabedelo in Paraiba region, north-east Brazil. The classes are targeted at adults and children from the communities where Carrefour stores operate. In 2006, 375 students attended the classes.
To share in the success of this initiative – launched in 2002 – Carrefour Brazil is inviting all its suppliers to join in with a school programme entitled Fornecedores do saber (" suppliers of knowledge" ).
In doing so, Carrefour Brazil hopes not only to develop its relationships with its suppliers but also to transform the lives of thousands of Brazilians.
