Sichuan pepper industry

Carrefour China sets an example by helping the WWF’s "Sichuan pepper" project.

Since 2004, Carrefour China - with the help of the Carrefour International Foundation - has maintained an active partnership with WWF in Sichuan, a region recently affected by the violent earthquake.

By diversifying its activity and creating a fair trade pepper industry in the natural reserve in Sichuan Province, WWF with the help of Carrefour China has been able to help a population of farmers in a region known for its natural riches. Thus it was that in 2004, Carrefour offered to support the peasant farmers in their initiative by marketing and selling their product in its stores. To do this, Carrefour undertook to buy a good part of their production directly and at a guaranteed minimum price.

Over the past four years, production has intensified and now represents more than 10% of the farmers’ income. Today 94 stores across China are involved. Furthermore, Carrefour China has committed to take the entire new harvest in October and will make payment still easier by pre-paying for a part of the goods.

Lastly, following the violent earthquake that badly affected Sichuan, the Carrefour Foundation China, with the support of the Carrefour International Foundation, has financed the reconstruction of farmers’ roads and houses.
