Carrefour has been mobilizing to help the Chinese people hit by the earthquake
Following the earthquake that struck Wenchuan and Sichuan province in southwestern China on Monday 12 May, the Carrefour Group has provided emergency aid to the people who have been affected in China.
As soon as news of the catastrophe emerged, the Carrefour International Foundation decided to provide Carrefour China a grant of 200,000 euros (2 million RMB) to provide emergency assistance in cooperation with the Red Cross. At the same time, Carrefour China also mobilized to help aid the victims by sending eight truckloads of emergency aid (water, food, tents, blankets, etc.) to the Chengdu emergency center.
Eric Legros, the Executive Director of Carrefour China, went to Chengdu yesterday and announced additional assistance of 100,000 euros (1 million RMB). This aid will be allocated to the Youth Foundation of Chengdu and will help with rebuilding the schools. A new convoy of 10 trucks filled with goods is already headed from Wuhan, Kunming, Chongqing, Shanghai and Changsha towards the emergency center in Chengdu.
None of the five Carrefour stores in Chengdu suffered any earthquake damage. One of the top priorities now is to ensure that the stores have supplies of basic foodstuffs, including instant noodles and water.
